Migration (2022)

Stoneware, underglaze, glaze
I did not know that the consequence of moving to America was me abandoning many aspects of my Korean background. After many years of living as a Californian, my memories in Korea feel ancient. I’ve captured my journey with immigration with the painting of California quails, the state bird, in the style of minhwa, a traditional Korean folk art typically created by commoners to depict their ordinary lives. I painted a symbol from my present in one of the styles found in my past.
